ABOUT
ASPHALT EMULSIONS
Asphalt emulsions are stable, homogeneous
mixtures of minute asphalt droplets suspended in a continuous water
phase. The stability of the oil and water dispersion is achieved
by a
colloid mill which shears the asphalt into tiny droplets while the
chemical surfactants in the water phase (commonly know as soap)
stabilizes the system chemically by imparting a charge to the asphalt
particles. The emulsions are categorized by the nature of this charge
as
cationic, anionic and nonionic.
APPLICATION
Asphalt emulsions are used in cold
processes for road
construction and maintenance. Emulsions are classified on the basis
of
how quickly the asphalt droplets will re-coalesce (break and setup).
The
terms rapid set (RS), medium set (MS), quick set (QS) and slow set
(SS)
have been adopted to classify the emulsions. A letter “C” in
front of
the classification denotes cationic systems while the absence of
a
letter in front of the classification denotes anionic systems. Nonionic
systems are used mostly in roofing and specialty applications and
are
not used in road construction and maintenance.
Rapid set (RS) emulsions
are used in chip seals, medium set (MS) emulsions are used in road aggregate
mixes such as those used in open graded pavements, quick set (QS) emulsions
are used in slurry mixes with fine aggregates as a finishing coat referred
to as slurry seal, and slow set (SS) emulsions are used in a sprayed on
layer as fog seal or tack coat. Slow set (SS) emulsions can also be mixed
with fine aggregate such as slate and clay and used as seal coats.

Dust Palliatives
About
Dust palliatives are the agents applied to various road surfaces to
prevent dust clouds and their environmental impact.
How It ’s Used
Most dust palliatives are spread directly to the road surface. Preparation
is minimal. Depending upon road usage and weather conditions, a
maintenance plan with subsequent applications is recommended.
Products
Lignins
Ligneous or “lignins” (also known as tree sap) are used
in dust control and surface stabilization. The product is derived
the from the lignin that naturally binds cellulose fibers together
to give trees and plants firmness. Commercial lignin products meet
the specifications of the U.S. Forest Service Administration, General
Service Administration and local and regional government standards.
Advantages
-Creates a denser, firmer road cap
-Water-soluble
-Eco-friendly and non-toxic
-Non-corrosive
-Easy to handle and apply
-Cost-effective
-Requires no special equipment or clothing
Coherex®
Coherex has been used for 40 years in many different applications
and industries for controlling dust and as a wind erosion agent. It is
a petroleum resin-based non-volatile emulsion consisting of approximately
60% semi-liquid natural petroleum resins and 40% wetting agents. Coherex
leaves a cumulative residue of the resins deposited on the soil particles,
so only occasional, light re-treatment is required.
Advantages
-Stable
-Long shelf life
-Concentrated
-Can be freeze-stabilized for winter storage
-Non-toxic
-Non-flammable
-Non-combustible
-Non-corrosive
Magnesium Chloride
Magnesium Chloride is a salt compound comprised of magnesium and
chlorine and is used for controlling dust on a variety of road types.
Advantages
-Eco-friendly
-Leaves no residue
-Colorless and odorless
-Hygroscopic (attracts moisture)
-Can be used down to 5° F

Cutbacks
About
An asphalt cutback consists of an asphalt cement blended with a petroleum
solvent resulting in viscous liquid. The solvents used in the production
of asphalt cutbacks are usually quite volatile. On the basis of
relative speed of evaporation, asphalt cutbacks are classified into rapid-curing,
medium-curing and slow-curing grades. Some grades are not allowed for
use in certain states.
How It ’s Used
Asphalt Cutbacks are applied by spreader truck. It
is not recommended to use asphalt cutbacks with tack pots or spread
with a hand wand.
Advantages
-Relatively inexpensive "road oiling" treatment
-Effective as dust control agent
-Useful as prime coat

Geotextiles
About
Geosynthetics are a specific, engineered response to a specific problem;
how to enable landforms to withstand severe and erosive forces of nature.
How
It ’s Used
-Asphalt road base support
-Soil stabilization
-Soil reinforcement
-Soil separation
-Soil retention
-Filtration
-Revegetation
-Erosion prevention/protection
Advantages
-Geosynthetics are engineered specifically as a cost-effective solution
for geotechnical and hydraulic applications.
-Geosynthetics are easy to install
-Geosynthetics are effective in permanent civil structures.

Paving Fabrics
About
A strong layer of fabric is applied under asphalt to minimize surface
water infiltration and prevent existing cracks in the road from surfacing.
Benefits
-Provides moisture barrier
-Absorbs stress
-Effectively retards reflective cracking
How It ’s Used
Paving fabrics are primarily applied with a mounted attachment on a
tractor onto a hot asphalt tack coat, then overlayed
with a minimum 1.5 inches of asphalt mix.
Advantages
-Paving fabrics create a barrier against water intrusion to the existing
road surface
-Extend road life
-Used throughout the U.S. as way to cost effectively maintain
road surfaces

Paving Grids
About
There are two types of Paving Grids: Reinforcing Grids and Waterproofing
Grid Composites.
Reinforcing Grids are designed to provided tensile strength to a new
overlay
Waterproofing Grid Composites are designed to provide tensile strength
and waterproofing to a new overlay
How It ’s Used
Grids are applied similarly to paving fabrics. A tractor mounted with
an attachment applies the grid on a hot asphalt tack coat. The asphalt
overlay recommended minimum thickness is 2".
Advantages
-High tensile strength
-Provide structural support to applied surface
-Waterproofing Grid Composites provide moisture barrier

TruPave® Engineered
Paving Mat
About
TruPave is a hybrid fibre glass and polyester non-woven mat, engineered
to be millable and recyclable, with high tensile strength at low strain.
TruPave is stable up to 495 F thus suitable for elevated paving
temperatures.
How It ’s Used
TruePave can be used in any application where a typical paving fabric
interlayer would be used, such as a mill and fill with a leveling
course or directly over existing pavement in hot tack asphalt. TruPave
mats are laid down then followed by an Hot Mix Overlay, where increased
immediate low-strain tensile, high temperature stability, millability
and recyclability are needed.
Advantages
-Millable and recyclable
-High tensile strength
-Stable performance
-Non-stretching
