road construction industry

Company History
In
1946, Jack worked for Shell Oil Company in Martinez, a small town
in Northern California that played host to great industrial expansion due
to the proximity of shipping and rail services. At Shell, Jack was involved
in product research and development. The 1950s and 1960s were boom times
for California’s
construction industry and in 1958, Jack had purchased Blomquist
tank lines and eventually changed the name to Telfer Tank Lines.
In the ensuing years, Telfer Tank Lines acquired two other tank truck companies:
J.P. Breen and Co. and Allyn Transportation Co.
In the mid-1970s, the business grew internationally
when it was hired to transport asphalt from Los Angeles refineries
to Mexico for the legendary Baja 1000 road race, which takes
place annually to this day in Ensenada, Baja California.
In the late-1970s under the new direction of then-General
Manager, Michael S. Telfer, the Asphalt Service Company, (a wholly
owned subsidairy of Telfer Tank Lines) opened an asphalt emulsion
facility to focus on manufacturing and application of road grade
asphalt emulsions. In
1980, Mike and John Telfer started Continental Western Transportation
based in Fontana, California. 2 years later, the operation moved
to San Diego, where it is today.
In
1984, to expand their service area, Mike and John Telfer acquired
Windsor Fuel of Windsor, Calif. ; in 1985, they purchased Western
Asphalt/Moore Bros. of of Sacramento, Calif. (renamed to Western
Oil & Spreading); and the Douglas Oil Terminal of Pittsburg, Calif.
The
Telfer Companies have continued to grow into the new millennium.
In 2001, the Telfer Companies (through Windsor Fuel Company) became
a licensee for the NovaChip® paving process by Koch Pavement Solutions.
NovaChip® is widely used in Europe, but is relatively new to the
United States. The Telfer Companies are now distributors and applicators
of the product. Also in 2001, the company formed its Telfer Geosynthetics
division. In 2003, the Telfer Companies
sold their Pittburg operation (The world's largest liquid polymer modification facililty)
to Valero Energy Corporation, the second
largest producer of petroleum products in the United States.
Today,
the company’s
commitment to excellence, quality and integrity continues. With $40M
in revenue, eight locations, 300 full-time and seasonal employees
(many with a tenure of over 20, 30, even 40 years), a fleet of over
100 vehicles, and hundreds of clients in the Western United States,
the Telfer Companies are leading the industry. The companies’ clients
include government agencies, private property owners and commercial
businesses in agriculture (including vineyards and winemakers),
general contractors and other construction-related companies.
